The idea for this eccentric blend combines exotic spices with native plants found in the Black Forest. Monkey 47 includes botanicals such as elderflower, blackthorn, cranberry and juniper which provide a refreshing acidity, lasting bitter notes and a slight sweetness. The Monkey 47 gin recipe has been adopted from a Second World War Royal Air force commander, Montgomery Collins whose enjoyment of gin inspired him to create his own unique recipe. After the war, Collins moved to the Black Forest region in Germany and used ingredients from the forest as well as spices from his Indian childhood as a basis for his gin recipe. In 2008, The Black Forest Distillers adopted Montgomery Collins' recipe and named the new gin Monkey 47 as a nod to the number of botanicals used.
