It's a little-known fact that the Utrecht armchair was never intended for luxury consumption. Tasked by the Metz & Co. department store in 1935 to design a serial production piece, Gerrit Rietveld quickly realised his creation was too unique and comfortable to part with; now, the sculptural, angular design is an icon of both the Neoplastic movement and Rietveld’s experimental vision.
Designed by Gerrit Rietveld
Gerrit Rietveld was a Dutch architect and designer whose radical, geometric forms helped define the De Stijl movement. Trained as a carpenter before studying architecture in Utrecht, he sought to strip design down to its purest elements, embracing bold colours and clean, intersecting lines, with his visionary approach continuing to influence modernist design.
