It's a little-known fact that the Utrecht armchair was never intended for luxury consumption. Tasked by the Metz & Co. department store in 1935 to design a serial production piece, Gerrit Rietveld quickly realised his creation was too unique and comfortable to part with; now, it is an icon of both the Neoplastic movement and Rietveld’s experimental vision.
