The opera singer emerged from the pages of 19th century magazines and became a source of inspiration to Piero Fornasetti, who imagined her in an endless series of portraits. In the case of Tema e Variazion No. 394, the presentation of Cavalieri is striking. While at first, it may seem as if the singer’s eyes are closed but look again and you’ll notice that in their place are two smaller renditions of her lips for a surreal approach to the classic portrait.
